As a result of the Human Genome Project, DNA sequences specific to individual genes are now known. This information provides researchers with the first step toward determining the genetic basis of disease, and in turn will drive the development and manufacture of new medicines to combat specific diseases.
In clinical settings, microarrays (or gene chips) that contain DNA probes which are specific to a variety of disease markers are used to rapidly determine the presence of disease in the sample. The continuing evolution of microarray technology has led to chips with enormous numbers of features on them. The tiny size of such feature-dense chips, along with the need to access their information in a timely manner, places stringent demands on light detection.
