POF is a multimode fiber for short-distance data transmission that is used in applications such as home or small office computer networking, automotive entertainment and information systems, office automation, and factory automation. Compared to optical fibers made of quartz or glass, POF has a much larger core size (900 microns or more), which makes it easier to splice and install. Another advantage of POF is the lower cost of equipment associated with it, including photodetectors and transmitters.
POF can be used with PIN photodiodes, visible LEDs, and photo ICs. A photo IC is a small package that houses a single chip which contains both the optical component (emitter or receiver) and its signal processing electronics. A lens is integrated into the photo IC in order to simplify optical fiber coupling.
