The History of TDI

1992 -Hamamatsu started R&D of the Back Thinned (BT)-CCD

At that time, many competitors had already been producing scientific grade CCD's. Hamamatsu wanted to break into the market with a unique niche. We added the back-thinned CCD's because of its unique capabilities to enable UV response and high sensitivity over the entire spectrum.

1995 -Hamamatsu developed CCDs with multi-tap and high speed amplifier.

There were many stages with the design of Hamamatsu's amplifiers. These amplifiers began with a single stage MOS FET, and ranged up to a three stage MOS FET.  This improvement allotted for remarkably high speed readout capabilities with exceptionally low noise.

1997 - Hamamatsu released the first standard BT-CCD with 1 M pixels/second, S7030/S7031 series for spectrometers.

Spectroscopy is Hamamatsu's leading market; having been serving this market with PMTs for over 20 years.  To be the leaders in this market, we selected a rectangular format CCD design, which complements nicely with diffraction gratings, used predominately in the spectrometer market.

1999 -Hamamatsu released the Front Illuminated-TDI CCD (S7199-01) for the dental market.

Hamamatsu identified the need in the dental market for digital panoramic sensors to replace film.  Uniting scintillate technology CSI, along with time-delay integration CCDs, we created a superior product that met the exclusive needs of the dental market.  Today, Hamamatsu clutches a significant market share for the digital panoramic machines.

2000 - Hamamatsu improved the BT-CCD to 800 M pixels/second. Having already designed the back-thinning and TDI technology, Hamamatsu overcame the challenges involved with the production of high speed back thinned CCD’s for TDI applications.
2006 - Hamamatsu developed the BT-CCD with 1.6G pixels/second

With each step forward, Hamamatsu continues to improve quality resolution to meet the demands for world renound speed, reaching 1.6 Giga pixels per second!

Today, Hamamatsu continues to dominate the market with its extraordinary high speed TDI-CCDs and exceptional custom design capabilities to meet our customers' desired needs.  Hamamatsu designs arguably the fastest back-thinned TDI-CCDs on the planet.  Now, we are on the edge of launching the next generation of BT-TDI-CCDs with board level camera.  Our target markets include the biomedical and industrial industries.  Please contact us and take advantage of our vast experience with TDI sensors.
