Hamamatsu has developed a series of compact ion detectors to meet the demands of smaller quadrupole mass spectrometers for residual gas analysers. These devices are capable of detecting ions or electrons, without an additional conversion dynode and can operate at pressures up to 0.01 Torr in a small space. Careful design of these devices results in a wide dynamic range and high signal-to-noise ratio. Despite their compact size, the electrodes have large secondary emissive surfaces, which result in a long service life. A drop in gain upon exposure to air, is also minimized, as the secondary emissive surface is resistant to carbon absorption, which causes a gain decrease.
