| Scintillators |
Scintillators deposited on aluminum, amorphous carbon and fiber optic plates are used for X-ray imaging in both non-destructive testing and medical applications. Two types of scintillating materials are available cesium iodide (CsI) and GOS (Gd 2O 2S: Tb). The CSI scintillator can be grown with a needle like structure, resulting in superior resolution. Aluminum and amorphous carbon plates are available up to 440 x 440 mm.
The FOS is an X-ray imaging device utilizing a fiber optic plate (FOP) coated with X-ray scintillation material. Available in sizes up 240 x 180 mm; the fiber optic plate consists of more than 50 million glass fibers of several microns in diameter, bundled together. Compared to conventional phosphor screens using adhesive, the FOS offers high sensitivity and high resolution and, when directly coupled to a commercially available CCD, allows real-time digital radiography. The fibre optic plate used in the FOS has excellent X-ray absorption characteristics, so that only 1 % of the x-rays enter the CCD, resulting in a less noisy image. |
