Silicon and GaAs photodiodes are available for the 850 nm communication band. Red LEDs at 650 nm are manufactured for plastic optical fiber (POF). A number of photo IC solutions are manufactured as transmitter and detector pairs for use in LANs. These include a set that meet the MOSTÒ standard for automobile LANs. Many of the devices come in a plastic molded package and some with a mini lens. Optical communication is extremely useful in factory environments where electrical noise interferes with wired or wireless communications.
