To reduce cost, improve performance and reliability a Si photodetector and signal processing circuit can be combined on one chip.  For example, a photodiode and synchronous detection circuit can be joined to form a photointerrupter that operates even in the presence of strong ambient light.  Photo ICs are used in industrial controls, brightness monitors and office products such as copiers and printers.
