Photointerrupters are transmission type sensors incorporating an infrared LED and a photosensor in the same package. Photointerrupters detect an object when it interrupts the light beam emitted from the LED. Phototransistors, or digital output photo ICs, can be selected as the photosensor.  Hamamatsu also provides photointerrupters that act as encoders when used in conjunction with a code strip.
