They are rugged (almost no moving parts), come fully factory-calibrated (no user calibration needed), are easy to use and can be connected to any PC via standard USB 2.0 interface. This highly sensitive and gateable model of the PMA-12 series uses a combination of an image intensifier and a cooled back-thinned CCD linear image sensor as a photodetector, and an optical fiber bundle for light input.
